By acquiring Crossbeam, Blue Coat says it's "laying the foundation for a broader strategy to transform the way businesses secure and optimize their networks." Web security vendor Blue Coat Systems Inc. announced this morning that it has entered into an agreement to acquire network security vendor Crossbeam Systems Inc. In doing so, Blue Coat says it’s “laying the foundation for a broader strategy to transform the way businesses secure and optimize their networks.” Blue Coat and Crossbeam are portfolio companies of private equity firm Thoma Bravo, LLC. Blue Coat CEO Greg Clark said Crossbeam’s technology will help Blue Coat gain a “best-in-class” support infrastructure and a platform that scales to meet the needs of increasingly complex IT environments. The Crossbeam X-Series portfolio is designed to let enterprise customers consolidate security and networking infrastructures. Combining it with Blue Coat’s Unified Security product is a natural progression. At least one customer has already given the union a thumbs up. Matthew Gyde, global general manager of security at Dimension Data, said in a press release, “The combination of Blue Coat’s web security solutions and Crossbeam’s scalable X-Series platform is an exciting proposition for us. We’re confident that this union will appeal to our clients that are looking to innovate securely and cost effectively.” The acquisition is expected to close Dec. 31.
