Dr. Eugene Schultz, respected veteran of the information security scene, passed away over the weekend.

He’s been enormously helpful to me in the past, breaking down complex security issues in language I could understand and making me a better writer for it. So I was saddened to find this note on Facebook this morning from one of my connections, Zynga CSO Nils Puhlmann:

I just heard that my friend, mentor and long time Security veteran, Dr. Eugene Schultz PhD, CISM, CISSP, passed away tonight. Gene was well known in the security community for his academic work as well as his tremendous effort volunteering in organizations like ISSA and ISACA.

But most importantly he will be missed for his brilliant mind, his worldliness and humor.

Gene, wherever you are now, I hope you will enlighten the ones around you as much as you have done with me for so many years.

Rest in peace.

I’m seeing similar tributes across the social media realm:

“Gene Schultz, kind, brillant, teacher, mentor and cybersecurity ICON passed away with family by his side in Livermore CA. Gene has touched many around the world and his loss will be felt around the world. Peace and prayers to Gene’s family,” wrote Pamela Fusco Smyth.

“What sad news to wake up to. I am proud to have known Gene, who was truly a person of integrity and honor,” wrote Ben Rothke.

I’m not seeing an obituary yet, but once I do I’ll be back here with more information.
