UK Culture Minister Ed Vaizey has issued Sony a stern warning that it needs to improve its data security measures, or face heavy fines.Ed Vaizey, the UK Culture Minister, has warned Sony that it needs to make “data protection […] a number one priority” going forward, and also noted that “the Information Commission has been given new powers to issue fines where necessary — I know the ICO has been in touch with Sony and clearly this is a huge issue, Sony getting hacked and people’s data being stolen.”Vaizey also said that the government would not interfere with the independent ICO’s investigation and decision on how to proceed. The ICO announced it would be conducting a full investigation at the end of April, on the advice of UK gamer advocacy group Gamers’ Voice.Vaizey noted that how Sony chooses to reimburse customers is a matter for the company itself to determine and neither the government nor the ICO would be able to directly affect this particular part of Sony’s action plan.
