Indian outsourcer Wipro said on Tuesday that a Twitter account that claims to be that of the company’s chairman Azim Premji is fraudulent.Wipro sent a message through its own Twitter account saying that Premji and Wipro do not endorse the “Azim Premji” twitter account. The chairman of Wipro, who is one of the world’s richest men, does not have a Twitter account, said a spokeswoman for the company.Wipro however has several Twitter accounts with which it communicates on Twitter. The Wipro spokeswoman said that the company is approaching Twitter to get the fraudulent id removed. The account purporting to be that of Premji starts with the innocuous if a little patronizing remark: “Hullo people… Thanks for finally bringing me here. Twitter has always attracted the masses, feels great to be one among the people…” A few hours later the masquerading Premji is already “retweeting” political commentary, an area Indian companies typically avoid. The Twitter account carries a link to the web site of the Azim Premji Foundation, a non-profit organization focused on improving quality of education in India’s rural schools.John Ribeiro covers outsourcing and general technology breaking news from India for The IDG News Service.
