Derrick Shareef, a 22-year-old Illinois man, has been arrested and charged with planning to attack a shopping mall about 90 miles northwest of Chicago in Rockford, Ill., the FBI said, according to a report on Bloomberg.com.

Shareef, of Rockford, was taken into custody on Dec. 6, and he is accused of plotting an attack that involved hiding hand grenades in garbage cans throughout the CherryVale Shopping Mall, said Chicago U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald, according to Bloomberg.

Shareef will face charges of trying to employ a weapon of mass destruction and trying to destroy or cause damage to a building via fire or explosion today in Chicago when he appears before U.S. Magistrate Judge Maria Valdez, Bloomberg reports.

Fitzgerald and the FBI said the man was arrested on Wednesday while meeting with an undercover agent who was supposed to give Shareef four hand grenades and a handgun in exchange for a number of stereo speakers, according to Bloomberg.

The FBI had Shareef under surveillance since September due to an incident in which he told an informant that he thought about committing violent acts against Americans, Bloomberg reports.
