After this story was originally reported, additional information was discovered that implicated a Cook County Jail guard in the escape.  For the update, read Ill. Jail Guard Charged for Aiding Escapees

All six of the inmates who escaped from an Illinois jail late Saturday night have been apprehended, the Associated Press reports via Yahoo News.

The men broke out of a special unit for persons with disciplinary issues at Cook County Jail in Oak Park, Ill. Only one guard was on duty because of a staffing shortage, when there should’ve been two, the AP reports.  An inmate threw hot water from a shower at the guard to subdue him, and then used a homemade shank to take his uniform.  That inmate then freed the six escapees before getting caught, the AP said.

On Sunday, two of the escapees were captured within 10 miles of the jail, and another was arrested that evening, Chicago police spokesperson JoAnn Taylor told the AP.

The final three inmates were located in an apartment, where one of them surrendered on Sunday night, the AP reports.  The last two resisted, and a SWAT team was brought in for negotiations before they too surrendered on Monday morning.  Reporters at the scene watched police officers lead a woman in handcuffs from the building shortly before the final two escapees were brought out.  There was reportedly at least one child in the apartment during the standoff, according to the AP.

The jailbreak was the second since last Friday, when an inmate apparently slipped into a laundry truck, the AP reports.  That inmate was apprehended on Saturday.
