In less than 24 hours over the weekend, police reported that six fatal shootings took place in the repopulating city of New Orleans, according to Reuters.

A quadruple shooting occurred on Friday night, resulting in the deaths of three brothers—two 16-year-olds and a 21-year-old—and a 39-year-old man who apparently was the target of the attack by two gunmen, New Orleans Police Superintendent Warren Riley told Reuters.

Two other unrelated murders took place on Saturday, according to Reuters, topping the number of deadly shootings during a mid-June weekend in which five teenagers were killed in the area.

New Orleans has primarily been the subject of reports on last summer’s devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, which claimed more than 1,300 lives and left the city facing a very long and expensive rehabilitation process.

With the violence that has stricken the area since, Reuters reports that Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco called for hundreds of National Guard troops and some state police to assist local police in curbing crime.
