Serono Admits Guilt in Medical Fraud

In the third-biggest health care fraud in U.S. history, SeronoLaboratories of Rockland, Mass. pleaded guilty, agreeing to pay asettlement of $704 million. The Boston Heraldreports that the settlement included paying back everything it tookfrom Medicaid over ten years and five employees will share $75 millionunder new whistleblower laws. Serono Labs also admitted to illegallyoffering doctors trips to France so they would write more prescriptionsfor Serostim, a drug that slows muscle wasting in people with AIDS. Read more.
