Relief Workers Charged in Katrina Fraud Have Records

Three Red Cross call center workers charged with planning to stealHurricane Katrina assistance funds were found to have criminal records.An Associated Press article in MercuryNews.comreports that their past convictions include theft, burglary and drugpossession, and they are among 14 suspects facing federal charges forallegedly stealing thousands of dollars. Not all of the suspects workedfor the Red Cross call center, however, and a spokesman for FortLauderdale, Fla.-based Spherion, which operates the call center, saidthe company didn’t have time to run background checks on its 1,200employees.
