Reader Comment Foils Red Cross Phishing Site

A Washington Post blog reader posted a comment on the Security Fix blogthat led to the closing down of a Red Cross phishing website. Brian Krebs’ Security Fix blogstated that the post referred to an e-mail that directed donations to acounterfeit website impersonating the American Red Cross. The Red Crossquickly determined that the site was a phishing scam exploitinghurricane relief generosity and they notified the FBI’s Internet FraudComplaint Center. The SANS Internet Storm Center mobilized and thetechnicians working at the company hosting site agreed to take thephishing site down. It went dead just before noon on Wednesday, Sept.7. Read more.
