Experts are saying that Birth certificates and other sensitivedocuments left among the waterlogged debris of Hurricane Katrina couldput the storm’s victims at heightened risk for identity theft. A Reuters article on Boston.comreports that consumers should keep a close eye on their bank statementsand order a copy of their credit reports once they get their lives backtogether to make sure they are not being victimized. U.S. officials andconsumer advocates said they had not yet heard of any cases of identitytheft related to the disaster because the crime usually takes months tounfold. Read more.
