Coast Guard Excels at Crisis Management

Forget about reacting to Hurricane Katrina. The U.S. Coast Guard senthelicopters to the Gulf Coast before the hurricane actually hit land. National Public Radioreports that helicopter crews were alerted to standby status away fromthe path of the storm. Just after Katrina passed, Sikorsky JayHawkhelicopters swooped in and immediately began rescuing strandedsurvivors from rooftops, attics and bridges. The Coast Guard iscredited with rescuing thousands of survivors, many of them beforenational organizations like FEMA and the National Guard were able tobegin emergency action.
