The Greatful Dead rock band has asked an independent website used by its fans to stop providing free downloads of thousands of live concert recordings. The New York Times reported that the fans, known as deadheads, are threatening to boycott the band’s recordings and merchandise if the ban on file sharing is not lifted.

The band’s spokesman told The Times that it had asked the operators of the Live Music Archive (www.archive.org) to make the concert recordings available only for listening, not downloading. The Greatful Dead, which stopped playing after leader Jerry Garcia died in 1995, has been selling downloads of its concerts on its official website (www.dead.net).
