Farmers are taking advantage of insurance programs initiated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. NPR.orgreports that as far back as 1999, watermelon farmers alone were paid$47.8 million for what they claimed were failed crops. With the growingsize and complexity of many crop insurance frauds, the USDA InspectorGeneral’s Office and the U.S. Department of Justice are making largecases against farmers as well as loss adjustors and insurance agentswho are often involved.
