Katrina Highlights Security Woes

Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the city of New Orleans andcreating security woes as residents flee the oncoming destruction fromwind, rain and tidal swells. The New York Timesreports that 80 percent of New Orleans residents evacuated on amandatory order from Mayor C. Ray Nagin. Local highways leading out ofthe city were paralyzed with traffic and local talk stations thatnormally scheduled religious programs on Sunday mornings became calland information centers for evacuation intelligence. The most powerfulstorm that many residents have seen in their lifetime, Katrina iswavering between a category 4 and 5 storm and could potentially leavethe area with 1 million refugees if predictions of major flooding cometrue.
