Assaults on Park Service Officers Increase

National Park Service officers were attacked 111 times in 2004, an increase of 13 incidents from two years ago. An article on GovExec.comreports that the Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility(PEER), a watchdog group based in Washington D.C., found that the ParkService is the most dangerous law enforcement agency in government.PEER found that Park Service officers are 12 times more likely to bekilled or injured by an attack than are FBI agents. Park Servicespokesman Al Nash feels that this is due to the fact that they have tofunction as regular police in addition to protecting monuments andicons that receive over 277 million annual visitors.
