Claria, the online advertising company formerly known as Gator, has named D. Reed Freeman Jr. to the position of Chief Privacy Officer and Vice President of Regulatory and Legislative Affairs. Freeman was most recently a partner at a Washington, D.C. law firm and also has served as adjunct professor of advertising and privacy law at George Mason University School of Law, and as an attorney with the Federal Trade Commission’s Bureau of Consumer Protection.

Claria’s GAIN adware network tracks online user behavior. Its controversial pop-up advertising platform is subject to legal and regulatory pressure from website operators, consumer groups, and new state laws.
