Salted Hash Ep 15: The state of security now and the not too distant future

This week, Salted Hash is joined by Rob Lee, faculty fellow at the SANS Technology Institute, to talk about preventable IT security and the state of the industry as 2018 gets underway.

Security predictions are in some cases a meme, mostly there to promote a company or product. But there is some value in taking stock of the year that’s ending and looking forward to see if there will be any significant changes.

It’s rare to see said changes (change, if any, is usually gradual), and for most of the security industry the pain that existed in 2017 will carry over to 2018.

But considering the gradual changes, the shift to focus on preventable IT security is one that will likely happen, as organizations really don’t have a choice.

The adage of ‘it’s not if you’ll be hacked, but when’ is still realistic, but maybe now It’s wiser to consider what your organization can do to get in front of any potential situation and prevent as much damage as possible.

“My prediction is that you’re going to start to see executives start to stop treating IT Security as a product they can implement, and start treating it as an operational concern as equally as important as managing their finances,” Lee remarked.

In addition to looking ahead, we also take a look back at some interesting moments in 2017. One of the standouts is the Justice Department naming foreign actors and indicting them for their acts.

This leads to an interesting conversation of the crossover between law and government operations, and down the path of once it’s on the internet, it’s there forever.

And then there’s Alexa and the collision of privacy and security, and the fact I miss my beeper – life was simpler then.

This episode was a lot of fun to shoot. With luck, 2018 will be better than 2017.
