Timeline: 4 Years of Data Breaches

It's been four years since the ChoicePoint security breach brought the evils of data theft to the public's attention. The recent breach at Heartland Payment Systems reflects a lack of progress on the data loss prevention front in that time period. Here are some of the bigger breaches of the last few years.

March 2008

The Hannaford Bros. supermarket chain says poorly-configured systems contributed to a massive data breach in which card data was stolen at the point of sale. The news comes amid the continued fallout over the TJX data breach a year before, in which more than 45 million credit cards were compromised. Hannaford's ultimately weathers the storm.
