Comcast transmits signal that it takes privacy seriously, hires Noopur Davis as privacy SVP

Comcast announced Monday that it has hired Noopur Davis in the newly created role of Senior Vice President, Product Security and Privacy for the Technology and Product team, reporting to Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of Comcast Cable.

Before joining Comcast, Davis led product security, product quality, enterprise agility, project management center of excellence, interoperability and content validation initiatives across Intel Security’s entire product line. At Comcast, Davis will build on this experience, overseeing a full-lifecycle approach to product security and privacy that embeds security and privacy throughout the development process, from product inception to end of life.

Davis’s team will also oversee security best practices for the Technology and Product organization and will partner with security leaders across the company, including Myrna Soto, Senior Vice President and Global Chief Information Security Officer for Comcast Corporation.

"Her longstanding leadership in the areas of both product quality and product security make her the ideal person to lead a team that will keep security at the forefront of our design and development processes," Werner said.

As Philly Mag points out, the announcement comes at a time when customer privacy is getting a lot of attention as a result not only of Apple's battle with the FBI over iPhone unlocking but also the encroachment of smart devices in the home. "[Comcast's} 'smart home' systems can increasingly sift through the data they collect on customers to automatically adjust the temperature of their house, turn lights off and on, and keep the home secure."

FierceCable also notes that Davis's hire at this time is "logical", adding that "given that Comcast is increasingly peddling in sensitive user information for efforts like advanced advertising."

A Comcast spokesman told Philly Mag that "the creation of Davis’s new position had been in the works awhile, building on a 'large bench' of company officials devoted to ensuring customer privacy is a top priority in product development."
