Guilty plea in political corruption case. In federal court in Washington Jan. 3, lobbyist Jack Abramoff pleaded guilty to conspiracy, fraud and tax evasion, and agreed to cooperate with prosecutors investigating political corruption. Abramoff is expected to help prosecutors conduct examinations into the actions of lawmakers, congressional aides and other lobbyists in Washington, The New York Times reported.
U.S. border surveillance needs work. Despite the $400 million dedicated to remote surveillance cameras and sensors along U.S. borders since 1997, Richard Skinner, the Department of Homeland Security inspector general, says those measures are still largely ineffective in detecting illegal activity.
A December 2005 inspector general report found that the surveillance cameras and seismic and magnetic sensors are not automatically linked and that they cover about 5 percent of the borders. The report calls for improvements in technology integration and standardization of data collection and analysis.
Emergency broadcast system update on agenda. A Senate panel endorsed a bill that would create a national alert system using the Internet, wireless phones, traditional broadcast radio and handhelds. The Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee acted in December on the bill that would reshape the existing federal Emergency Alert System that relies on cable and broadcast television and radio. The bill would also pave the way for a national tsunami warning system.
A counterterrorism exercise for federal officials could benefit from IT systems with better information tracking and sharing capabilities, according to a DHS evaluation of last Aprils simulated bioterrorism attack exercises in New Jersey and Connecticut.
