April 01, 2005CSO — The numbers on phishing during the holiday season are in, and they're not good. "And the attacks are getting more sophisticated every week," says David Jevans, who heads up the Anti-Phishing Working Group. While many view phishing as a problem originating overseas, the most dominant place to host phishing sites remains the good old U.S. of A. A full third of all phishing sites are hosted in America. Here's a look at the current scene:

1,707 Number of active phishing sites reported in December 2004

9,019 Number of new phishing e-mails

55 Number of brands hijacked by phishing campaigns in December 2004

24% Phishing e-mails that contain some form of target name in URL

63% Phishing e-mails that contain no host name, just IP address

6 days Average time online for site

30 days Longest time online for site

86% Percentage of attacks that target HTTP port 80
