Symantec Corp. recently announced new enhancements to its Symantec.cloud portfolio of software-as-a-service (SaaS) offerings, bringing more of the company's technologies to the cloud. The new offerings are designed to improve service manageability and increase flexibility for customers.
Among the service enhancements -- an automatic backup capability, Symantec Backup Exec.cloud, which will automatically protect the data on a customers PCs and servers via online backup and recovery. A beta for the service will begin in June and the service will be available later this year.
Online backup services like Symantec's BackupExec.cloud offer an excellent option for small businesses or remote offices looking to offload their IT infrastructure and quickly protect critical data by automatically streaming it to off-site datacenters, says Lauren Whitehouse, senior analyst with Enterprise Strategy Group, Inc. Data can be recovered to any service-enabled machine over the Internet.

Another new offering is simplified archiving. Symantec will introduce future enhancements to Symantec.cloud email archiving services under the name Symantec Enterprise Vault.cloud in June.
A third enhancement is a new iPhone application in beta release that allows customers of email, Web, and instant messaging security offerings to easily view historical data, reports and charts, as well as product and service information from their handheld device.
We've seen a great deal of momentum in the adoption of cloud-based services, says Rowan Trollope, senior vice president, Symantec.cloud. This demand has necessitated expansion of our data center capabilities to deliver SaaS services to customers in more than 112 countries. The number of Symantec.cloud users grew 16 percent from 9.2 million users in February 2010 to 10.7 million in February 2011.
