Employers conducted nearly 4.4 million background checks in 2004, up 16% from almost 3.8 million conducted in 2003.

- Employers conducted nearly 4.4 million background checks in 2004, up 16% from almost 3.8 million conducted in 2003. The number of background checks conducted in 2004 is also more than three times the number conducted just eight years ago.
- Of criminal records checked, 5% revealed an infraction.
- 50% of employment, credential and education checks uncovered discrepancies in information applicants provided employers.
- 29% of applicants had at least one violation on their driving records, and 45% of the credit records checked revealed a bankruptcy, judgment, lien or report to a collection agency.
